Mobile Tornado's IPRS™ (Internet Protocol Radio Service) platform is a carrier-class platform that includes a comprehensive solution for the delivery of Instant Communication services. Based on OMA for interoperability, it is designed to seamlessly integrate into pre-IMS and IMS environments. It requires only minimal interaction with voice networks, minimising complexity while reducing risks. The platform's core capabilities include the ability to identify users, conduct half-duplex voice communications, corporate Instant Messaging, locating, and alerting.

Unlike traditional PTT solutions, which are very proprietary and limited in their interoperability with other solutions (e.g. a Nokia PTT user cannot communicate with a Motorola PTT user), the IPRS™ solution offers complete interoperability between all PTT clients. A user of the IPRS™ Client can communicate with a user of a Nokia client, an OMA client or a Motorola client. The IPRS™ Server offers all the various components such as, XDMS, Presence Server, PTT Signaling Server and Media Server to serve all the OMA compatible clients.

The platform offers multiple services including, Instant Talk, Instant Messaging, Instant Locate and Instant Alert, based on a per-user licensing model. The Mobile Tornado Software Development Kit allows third parties to fully integrate any or all of these services into their existing offering.

Session Priority:
IPRS implements a prioritisation logic that allows interruption of communications and 'kidnapping' of users from 'channels' according to the seniority of the initiator, the communication method that is used, and the purpose or urgency of the communication.

Unlike radio communications, where everyone can listen to everyone else on the same channel, the IPRS platform offers one-to-one as well as one-to-many streaming communications. All the sessions in the system are similar to setting a new channel (private for the purpose of the session). It also removes the limitation of 'Channel occupancy' in PMR system, as it allows the interruption of transmission to users.

User Priority:
The IPRS platform offers additional privileges to 'Dispatcher' users in the system to allow them to immediately interrupt any ongoing communication, as well as being able to create one-way calls and even remotely control users' PTT:

  • » Announcement — One-Way communication to multiple users, with no presence based information
  • » High Priority Call — Two-Way communication which will kidnap users from any other call type
  • » Emergency — Allows remote-control of PTT and no call timeout during calls with users who have raised an alert

Voice Reliability:
A per-client buffering mechanism enables the IPRS platform to deliver the best possible QoE for each member of a call.

Organisation Control:
Being very corporate-focused, the IPRS platform restricts services and communication based on the organisation structure of the provisioned users - increasing productivity and reducing unwanted external conversation.

Interoperability:
Plugins allow the IPRS platform to interoperate with existing Push To Talk platforms or clients, including Nokia and OMA based systems.

 

Authentication:
Users are identified by Username or SIP URI and Password and granted access to the relevant services based on their user profile.

Address Book:
The IPRS™ Platform offers a network-based address book with the ability to be accessed and managed by mobile and PC clients as well as a web-based interface as it is stored centrally and syncronised in real-time.

Presence:
Presence information is transmitted in real-time to all interested parties with 4 statuses available — Online, Offline, Do Not Disturb, and Page Me.

Provisioning:
Can be handled either directly in the Provisioning Console, through a web-based interface, or alternatively via a SOAP interface to enable integration with existing or bespoke systems.

Billing:
The IPRS Accounting (Mediation) server handles CDR generation and offers support for both pre-pair and post-paid billing models.

Monitoring:
Performed by SNMP using standard MIBs it is possible to monitor various aspects of the system such as load, latency, call volumes, user status, etc.

CALEA:
Required sessions or users may be provisioned for LEA, allowing live interception and recording.

Communication Security and Encryption:
Combining Diffie-Helmann and AES encryption on a per-user or per-group basis it is possible to offer security on the platform.
